A new survey conducted by consulting firm Avanade found a disconnect between perception and reality when it comes to enterprise social collaboration software. Most of those surveyed said they used enterprise social collaboration software at work, but when asked which platforms they use, most cited Facebook and Twitter rather than software platforms designed for enterprise users.

ZDNet's Toby Wolpe reported, "Nine out of 10 IT staff and about two-thirds of managers and users say they are using social-networking technologies at work, according to a global study by Microsoft- and Accenture-owned services firm Avanade. However, when pressed to identify the products they are using, the only social platforms used by more than half of respondents turn out to be Facebook and Twitter. Actual enterprise collaboration tools, such as Microsoft SharePoint and IBM Connections, feature lower down the list."

CITEWorld's Nancy Gohring noted, "Among those who use social networking to collaborate at work, a whopping 74 percent said they use Facebook. In second place is Twitter, which 51 percent said they use for work collaboration, followed by LinkedIn with 45 percent. The first real enterprise social app to make the cut in the survey is Microsoft's SharePoint, with 39 percent of social networking workers using it, followed by IBM Connections at 17 percent, and Salesforce's Chatter at 12 percent."

InformationWeek's Gary Flood wrote, "The problem: while the CIO, aided by firms like Avanade, have been providing enterprise-caliber tools, no one's really been doing much collaboration work with them. This has left a huge vacuum that Avanade says is being rapidly filled with homegrown, grassroots-driven, consumer-based technology instead."

Or maybe you want to allow staff to work just as efficiently away from the office as at their desks and like the collaboration tools offered by SharePoint.

Regardless of how you get to the start line, you don't want to find yourself six months down the road with all the cool new collaboration technologies you have invested in lying fallow, with a bill for services that no one is using.

Tim Wallis, founder and CEO of Content and Code, a Microsoft consultancy in London, has a six-step plan for clients embarking on an Office 365 implementation that helps them get the most out of the technology. The key to success, he says, lies in planning well.

Read also:

Offshore hosting perfect for AGL (The Australian)

Explore: 6 additional articles.

Google's I/0 event keynote is in full swing with announcements for developers, gadget lovers and social media users. A cross-platform Hangouts app is one of the highlights, bringing its various communications apps together. Google Across the Mobile Map

With all the major social media and communications players trying to get their apps on most ecosystems, you can have many folders on your smartphone if you need to chat across barriers. Microsoft offer Skype, Outlook and Lync, Facebook has its main app and Messenger, Google itself has Google+, Talk App and many others. That's a lot of apps for just trying to get along.

To try and bring a semblance of order to this mess, Google just showed off a new Hangouts app that will run across Android, iOS devices and Chrome on desktops to bring Google Talk, Google+ Messenger, and Google+'s Hangout concept together.

Based on conversations you've had, it focuses on the people you communicate with most and will provide the easiest way to get in touch, from messages and voice to video chat. Conversations can be broken up into rooms, and you can invite multiple friends in for a true Hangout (for up to 10 people). As with Facebook's recent Messenger update, there's a load of fun emoticons to use to spice up the chat and Its Good To Talk

Marc Benioff, Salesforce.com's hyperbolic CEO, has been telling anyone who will listen that the "sudden convergence of cloud, social and mobile spheres" is forcing - and allowing - companies to connect with customers in new ways, and to listen with an intensity never before possible.

I'm sure the benefits of social business are dramatic and undeniable, but am I alone in being totally creeped out at what seems to be an obvious invastion of privacy? I don't know about you, but I'm just not ready for companies - even companies I choose to do business with - to closely follow everything I do and say. Even if other humans aren't involved.Do You Want To Be Connected To A Machine?

At a recent executive event in San Francisco, Benioff entertained customers and journalists wtih a video featuring Beth Comstock, GE's high-profile CMO, claiming her "core belief" is that "business is social." But she didn't just mean people communicating with people, she also meant people communicating with machines.

The big question for GE, Comstock said, is "how do we connect our customers/employees to our machines?" GE's goal is to combine data from customers and data from its machines - connecting machines to social networks is very big.

But BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said BBM users are very active, sending 10 billion messages a day, and half the messages received are read within 20 seconds.

Opening up BBM to iOS 6 devices and above and Android Ice Cream Sandwich devices and above will expand BBM's reach, Heins said.

Crosspeer Cloud and Ezuce are leading the way in the post-PBX era in providing innovative, cost-effective Unified Communications solutions in the cloud to Enterprises across the globe.

Las Vegas, NV, May 17, 2013 (PR.com) Crosspeer Cloud, the leading Open Cloud IAAS provider and Ezuce, the leader in Enterprise Unified Communications have forged an alliance to deliver Enterprise Unified Communications Solutions on the Crosspeer Open Cloud Computing Infrastructure."We are delighted to be working with Ezuce and their expert team of communications technologists," said Salvador Diaz-Verson, CEO of Crosspeer. "Their suite of Unified Communications products delivered from Crosspeer's Open Cloud IAAS can provide enterprises with a complete set of tools and advanced communications functionality that can help them to be more productive, more cost-efficient and globally reachable from any communications device at any time. The Ezuce solution is a fraction of the cost of competing technologies and the Crosspeer Cloud enables enterprises to deploy a best-of-breed communications system with zero CAPEX."

Unified Communications (UC) is the integration of real-time communication services such as instant messaging, presence, IP telephony, video conferencing, interactive white boards and speech recognition with non-real time communication services such as unified messaging, voicemail, email, SMS and fax. Unified Communications allows an individual to send a message on one medium, and have it received on another medium. For example, one can receive a voicemail message and choose to access it through email or a cell phone. UC products such as those developed by Ezuce, expand the reach beyond voicemail to include real-time data communications, collaboration and integrated messaging from a variety of communications technologies into a single platform.

OpenUC, the flagship product from Ezuce is a complete unified communications solution for enterprise communications including voice, video, instant messaging, presence, conferencing, collaboration, unified messaging, call center and mobility. Features and functions include everything a company needs to manage an enterprise-grade communications system at an unprecedented price-point. Ezuce also maintains the code base for sipXecs, an open source unified communications and collaboration project available from the SIPfoundry development community. The sipXecs system is not as full-featured as OpenUC, but it is quite popular with open source enthusiasts, and can be deployed easily on the Crosspeer Cloud.

Enter Readyportal, an online content management solution from Toronto's Debut Logic Canada Inc.

"Prior to signing on with Readyportal, whenever we had to make a request, we had to file it with our Web designer, and then she would have to go through a process, and then we have to follow up to check on the status it was all very out of our hands, pretty much," Yu said.

"And ever since we signed onto Readyportal, it really empowered us to make quick and fast changes, because we're a management consulting firm. We have to be agile to meet specific opportunities or the changes in the market, so Readyportal allowed us to do that very quickly."

IBM recently announced that Lotus 1-2-3 will no longer be available for purchase. Most readers of this article will likely have one of two reactions: "What is Lotus 1-2-3?" or else an incredulous "Lotus 1-2-3 was still on the market?" If you're of a certain age, you may wistfully remember Lotus 1-2-3 as your first spreadsheet program.

Lotus 1-2-3 has had a suggested retail price of $352, but it soon will no longer be available for purchase. Although it wasn't the first spreadsheet VisiCalc has that distinction Lotus 1-2-3 owned the spreadsheet for a number of years. Although Lotus did outlast Quattro Pro, Microsoft Excel eventually won the spreadsheet wars.

Lotus was slow to innovate and clung valiantly to its DOS-based heritage by way of feeble desktop publishing efforts like WYSIWYG. That wacky acronym stood for "What You See Is What You Get" with regard to applying fonts, colors, and other formatting to data and getting the same output on paper as one saw on-screen. If you want a sense of how spreadsheets looked "back-in-the-day," you can download and run VisiCalc.

Lotus 1-2-3 was first released in 1983, so its discontinuance this year marks the end of a thirty-year run. IBM bought Lotus Corporation in 1995 and still sells Lotus Notes, among other offerings, but will soon be dropping the Lotus name entirely. Lotus Corporation had a storied past, including innovative spreadsheet alternatives such as Improv and Symphony that never gained traction in the marketplace.

County goes from ECM to ETM, and one letter makes a huge difference

Before enterprise content management (ECM) tamed the beast, most large government organizations had electronic documents in a variety of formats stored in many different places, which made finding a form a time-consuming process at best. Today with ECM, all content throughout an enterprise is stored according to a highly detailed system so that people can find documents at any point in a process.

But what if agencies could be even more organized than that, or if the forms themselves could become the process? That's what Eaton County, Mich., is starting to do, with a process that transforms ECM into enterprise transactional management (ETM).

Robert J. Sobie, director of Eaton's Information Systems department, says the county was one of the first to use ECM, implementing Laserfiche software countywide back in 1995. And although that made his county one of the most organized in the state, continued growth and increased usage created the need for something else.

PageUp People said hosting its CareerPath application in the cloud is saving the company $130,000 per annum.

The Melbourne-based developer of staff management software has hosted the application with Microsoft Windows Azure. The CareerPath software allows employers manage career development of staff and identify top performers and potential flight risks. PageUp People designed the application's CareerDNA search engine with open source database tool, RavenDB.

"Without the ability to elastically scale CareerPath to peak periods using Azure, we would have had to spend an additional $30,000 per year on hardware," said PageUp People CIO, Simon Cariss.

"Since deploying CareerPath on Azure, we haven't had to invest time in managing the application infrastructure," he added. "The system almost runs itself, which has freed the infrastructure team to work on strategic projects. That additional, high-value, resource time is worth $100,000 per year to our company."

Polycom, Inc, leader in open standards-based unified communications (UC&C) has announced the immense success of the NHS Cumbria & Lancashire Cardiac and Stroke Network (CSNLC) in its first year-and-a-half of providing 247 access to thrombolysis treatment from remote specialists.

The telestroke network serves eight hospitals that in turn serve 2.2 million people spread over 3,500m. For this extensive population and extended rural area, 16 consultants are able to deliver 24/7 thrombolysis treatment to patients with acute ischaemic stroke. The reason such a small number of consultants can serve such a large rural population is telemedicine, powered by Polycom RealPresence video solutions. Working with Polycom partner MultiSense Communications, each hospital site is equipped with a telestroke solution that includes Polycom Practitioner Carts and their mobile HD video in the hospitals, and Polycom CMA Desktop video collaboration software installed on the clinician's home PC.

Over 520 patients in Cumbria and Lancashire have benefited from the telestroke service since its launch in July 2011, with over 220 of those patients receiving thrombolysis. Patients and their family members appreciate the benefits of the new technology. One called the Polycom Practitioner Cart a "fabulous piece of equipment." "Three cheers for technology," said another; "the doctor on the screen was a very professional man and no doubt saved us vital minutes with his consultation."

A third patient described her life-saving treatment experience in more detail: "The doctor appeared on the screen, introduced himself and talked about my CT results with the doctor who was in the room with me. He talked to me from the screen, asking me to try different movements, then the doctors talked about the amount I'd need and how it should be given to me. I feel incredibly lucky - the treatment I had doesn't work for everyone, and it has to be given within a really short time after the stroke. I would still be in hospital now if I hadn't had it."
