Microsoft's Office Web Apps have been around since 2010. Since then, they have slowly morphed from lightweight document viewers to relatively full-blown Office apps. Going forward, Microsoft senior product marketing manager Amanda Lefebvre wrote in a blog post last night, the plan is "to deliver Office Web Apps that people can rely on to create polished Office documents from start to finish, all from the Web." To do this, Microsoft is going to focus on three key areas: user experience, social and collaboration, as well as better cross-platform support.

In concrete terms, Lefebvre writes, this means the Office Web Apps will soon get better collaboration tools. Currently, the Web Apps allow users to co-author documents, but Microsoft's doesn't allow for Google Wave-like, real-time co-authoring just yet. That, however, is in the pipeline. Microsoft, she writes, will "introduce real time co-authoring in the Office Web Apps so that all file authors will automatically see presence and edits from others as they happen without needing to refresh." This feature is already available in the PowerPoint Web App today and will surely roll out to the other apps in the near future.

Also in the queue for the near future is the ability to edit documents via mobile Chrome on Android. Windows 8 tablet and iPad users can already do this, but as Microsoft has focused on Windows and iOS, Android users have often been left behind. Microsoft says it wants to "enable you to access Office content and tools from your device of choice through cross browser support on those devices where Office isn't installed or available."

Other new features and enhancements in the Microsoft pipeline include support for easier file management from the apps, faster launch times and support for "find and replace" in the Word app.

Read also:

Microsoft Office Web Apps to receive real-time collaboration, Android support (Engadget)

Microsoft Office Web Apps Come to Android (PC Magazine)

Microsoft Office for Android?

A detection-avoiding advanced persistent threat (APT) has been found targeting a flaw in Microsoft Office to infect thousands of machines across over 100 countries.

Security firm Trend Micro uncovered a campaign, codenamed SafeNet, targeting a known flaw in older versions of Microsoft Office on Friday. "The distribution mechanism the Safe campaign used involved spear-phishing emails that contain a malicious attachment," the report said.

"This technique, which is quite common for APT campaigns, encourages a recipient to open a malicious attachment by sending an email with contextually relevant content. We discovered several malicious documents that all exploited a Microsoft Office vulnerability (CVE-2012-0158). If opened with a version of Microsoft Word that is not up to date, a malicious payload is silently installed on the user's computer."

Trend Micro said the full extent of the campaign remains unknown although it has already linked several thousand IP addresses to it, indicating that its reach will be moderately far.

Read also:

Securo-boffins uncover new GLOBAL cyber-espionage operation (Register)

Explore: 5 additional articles.

Those files can be accessed from SkyDrive.com, via desktop apps for Windows and Mac and with apps for Windows Phone, Android and iOS.

APPLE users can also back up data from their Mac computer, iPhone, iPad or iPod such as photos, music, apps, calendars and documents to iCloud, a feature already built into new iOS devices and new Mac computers.

Wacom the same company that brings Photoshop artists and big spenders products like the 24HD Touch announced today that it is making an addition to its more whimsical line of Bamboo products. Dubbed Bamboo Loop, the new iOS (and soon Android) app puts photo sharing and SMS together to create a more fun and engaging messaging experience.

This isn't Wacom's first foray into the iOS app market. The company's Bamboo Paper app is a relatively well-received notebook app for iPad users. But this is the first time Wacom has put its connection to photography to use in this way, and the app has already garnered some positive attention from the tech media.'sHere's a short ad that shows you what Bamboo Loop is all about:

The app is fairly straight forward: once users download the app for free off the iTunes store, they will be able to take pictures, add graphics and write messages on them using "a variety of styles and realistic inking tools." They then send their creation, now known as a Loop card, to any number of friends.

Once the photo recipient has seen your message, they can either create their own, or "loop" the card back after they've added their own flair all they have to do is literally swipe it back to you. Both sender and recipient will also have the opportunity to share their Loop card on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram.

Read also:

Wacom releases Bamboo Loop photo-sharing digital card app (video) - Engadget (Engadget)

Explore: 2 additional articles.

In a series of surveys last year of more than 1,000 SharePoint administrators and business professionals, much was learned about how people "perceived" their organizations to be handling their SharePoint governance strategy. The data showed a large gap between those perceptions and what governance actually looked like inside businesses.

Of the respondents, 67% viewed SharePoint governance as critical to the success of the platform, but only a mere 26% of respondents believed they have a well-defined strategy.

After conversations with customers and partners discussing the state of SharePoint within their organizations, the governance gap is clear and people are looking for reassurance that their planning is moving in the right direction. The most common questions include: Where should I begin? What are the best practices? What does Microsoft recommend? How do I manage change? Who should be involved?

Many similarities between the need for governance planning and building out project management offices (PMOs) have become evident over the past 20 years of working in the space. One of the primary roles of a good PMO is to build an environment of trust and communication with your customer organizations to help with internal, platform and customer experience improvements. There are some people that your company will trust more than others, especially when something goes wrong, and these people are needed to quickly step in to assess things, formulate a plan and then tell you not to worry. These PMOs are trusted and your business has confidence in them.

Following Google's rollout of a new Hangouts service for mobile and Google+, the company is giving Gmail users the opportunity to replace Google Chat with Hangouts integration. But heavy users of Google Voice may want to hold off on the switch, because the new Hangouts feature kills your capability to send SMS messages and make voice calls to landline and mobile numbers from Gmail.

The good news is this may be just a temporary, yet annoying step, although we confirmed it. We've also sought comment from Google, and will update this when we learn more.Hanging out in Gmail

Google has offered Hangouts integration in Gmail since last July when the company simply added Hangouts to your Gmail Chat options. You could still call your Gmail contacts from your inbox, make private video calls, and, of course, trade instant messages.

The new version of Hangouts for Gmail eliminates Google Chat and replaces it with Hangouts. This feature supports video calls with up to ten people at once, and lets you trade emojis and send photos.Hangouts in Gmail.

We have all experienced that awful feeling after hitting the 'send' button and realizing a copy of a sensitive or confidential email has inadvertently gone to the wrong person.

Usually, the situation is simply embarrassing. Not so for Maria Fernandes, a Mississauga employee of healthcare communications company Marketforce Inc. In March 2011, she accidentally received an email discussing whether or not she should be fired.

Court documents allege that Linda Guerin, the company's director of operations, intended to send the email to the company's lawyers. Too late she realized Fernandes was also on the list and she unsuccessfully sent three recall notices. She also sent an email to Fernandes asking that she delete the message without opening it.

Fernandes read it, treated the information in the email as a constructive dismissal and hired a lawyer. A few weeks later, she left her job as a director of client services at Marketforce, which subsequently amalgamated with Sudler & Hennessey ULC. Fernandes claimed in a court filing, she had effectively been fired. She had worked for the company for over six years and was earning $145,000 a year.

Shirley Springer wrote that she has nearly 400 messages in her Outlook Express "Inbox" and asked if she can move them all to a USB flash drive.

Yes. Both Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail allow users to drag messages from their inbox (or any other OE/WLM folder) to another location. What you cannot do, however, is drag a folder full of messages only actual messages can be dragged.

Nonetheless, this limitation can be circumvented by first creating a new folder on the flash drive by right-clicking it and choosing New>Folder, whereupon you can name it "Inbox." Then you drag the messages from the old inbox folder into the new one. The messages can be dragged all at once by clicking the first one, holding down your SHIFT key, and then clicking the last message. To drag only certain messages en masse, hold down CTRL while clicking each target item.

All OE and WLM messages are normally assigned a file name based on the contents of their Subject Line, along with having the extension ".EML" automatically appended to each file name.

Some more consolidation afoot in the worlds of mobile marketing and mobile payments: Payvia, one of the many startups working in the area of carrier-based mobile billing, is buying Mogreet, a mobile marketing company that delivers campaigns via text, video and picture messaging services. Terms of the deal were not disclosed although we have contacted the company to ask. Payvia says that the whole of the Mogreet team will be coming over, including Mogreet founder and CEO James Citron, who will become Payvia's Chief Marketing Officer.

The move is an interesting one, in that it signals how Payvia, to differentiate itself from the pack, is creating applications itself that utilize its payment services.

"Our mobile payments offer resonates strongly with the market because it is built on our proprietary carrier connected technology that gives us a unique ability to understand consumer mobile usage," said Darcy Wedd, CEO, payvia, in a statement. "Our clients have told us they also need a simpler way to link targeted mobile transactions to their marketing campaigns. By integrating Mogreet's solutions on our platform we answer that need. As the only company to solve a known disconnect between traditional mobile commerce and engagement solutions, Payvia is well positioned to increase mobile's share of the $252 billion* e-commerce market."

Payvia says that it has the largest direct carrier connected messaging and mobile payments platform in the U.S., covering 120 million unique mobile users and processing billions of mobile messages every year. The company says it has paid out to merchants and developers worldwide more than $2 billion in global mobile commerce revenues. (There are other carrier billing platforms that will claim they are bigger, but the qualification here seems to be around the messaging platform that Payvia does this through.)

Read also:

payvia Acquires Mogreet to Create the First End-to-End Mobile Payments, User ... (MarketWatch (press release))

payvia acquires Mogreet to link mobile transactions with marketing campaigns (Fiercemobilecontent)

Payvia Acquires Mobile Marketing Company Mogreet - The Next Web (The Next Web)

Explore: 5 additional articles.

Microsoft's disdain for Google doesn't extend to all of its rival's products.

In a rare bit of cooperation, Microsoft's Outlook.com is giving users of its free email service the option of logging into Google Chat to exchange instant messages and engage in audio or video conversations.

The tie-in announced Tuesday represents an uneasy alliance in the midst of a typically contentious relationship between Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc.

Microsoft is framing its embrace of Google Chat as an example of how it's trying to help connect people who rely on various services to interact with one another. Both Outlook.com and Google Chat are offered for free as way for Microsoft and Google to attract more online traffic to its advertising-supported services.

Read also:

Microsoft allows chat with Google contacts within Outlook.com (Digit)

Microsoft adds built-in Google Talk to Outlook.com and SkyDrive.com - Engadget (Engadget)

Microsoft Brings Google Talk Chat Into Outlook.com [Updates] - MakeUseOf (MakeUseOf)

Explore: 91 additional articles.

It's still practically a newborn but Indian mobile messaging app Hike is already channelling almost a billion messages a month between its five million registered users. Those numbers sound insignificant when you stack them up against the big beasts of the messaging space WhatsApp claims 200 million+ monthly active users, and some 600 billion in and outbound messages but Hike's growth is impressive when you consider it's only just over four months old. WhatsApp, of course, has been around for almost four years.

Mobile messaging is hot property right now, with tech giants like Facebook and most recently Google bent on owning the messaging space. The reason for all this interest in cross-platform chit-chat is that mobile messaging looks poised to steal social networking's crown jewels: aka the cool factor, and thus the user engagement (Hike incorporates social status updates and emoji-based moods into its messaging app, to hang on the social chain). But the idea that there can be one ultimate mobile messaging winner or one player as dominant as Facebook in the full-fat social networking space seems unlikely. And that's what Hike is banking on to disrupt WhatsApp and keep Facebook Messenger and its ilk from crashing its just-getting-started party.

There's no doubt that local market realities intercede much more on mobile than on the traditional social networking playground of the desktop, especially in emerging markets where device, network and carrier variations influence how people communicate based on how they can afford to communicate. Those complexities provide an opportunity for local app makers to triumph over goliath outsiders if they build fixes for the local market, argues Hike.

"Given how competitive this market is we do feel that in about 3 or 5 years from now you will have somewhere between three to five players globally that own parts of the messaging space in the world. You're already seeing it right now, you have Line in Japan, you have Kakao in Korea, you have WeChat in China, you have WhatsApp in South America and Europe, you have of course Facebook message or iMessage dominating in U.S. and WhatsApp growing there too. In India of course WhatsApp is the dominant player but we've come on to be a very strong number two in just four months," says Hike creator Kavin Mittal.

I use Google's Gmail and recently a new version appeared, which I found confusing. There was provision to revert to the old format but it would not let me do so and I had to wait for my neighbour to come home to help out. I find this infuriating and there is no phone number to contact these people.J Toplis, by email

It is a little unrealistic to expect a service like Gmail not to change from time to time, as new features and options are added; some of them are actually quite useful. Bear in mind also that Gmail is free (well, supported by advertising) but this means they can do pretty much what they like.

The chances of you speaking to a real person on this matter are frankly small to non-existent. To be fair Google does invite online feedback and comment, and have been known to respond to user suggestions. You can add your two-penneth to the debate through the Gmail Suggestion box, and there are plenty of online forums, including its own Community Help Forum.

This is a good place to air your grievances, seek help from other users; you may even hear from a Google insider, they monitor the conversations and frequently chip in with advice.

Not one to be left behind in the messaging space, Google on Wednesday unveiled its revamped take on Hangouts, cobbling together a number of the company's communication tools into one unified system.

Pretty straightforward stuff: You're able to chat with friends through five different types of Google properties Gmail, Google+, iOS and Android devices, and the Chrome browser.

Much like Facebook, WhatsApp, Path and the many, many other messaging services available today, you're able to send cutesy emoji smiley-face icons and photos, save your entire chat history between devices based on one (or more) people, and make video calls.

It's a logical progression for Google whose Gmail and Chrome properties have massive reach around the world and, frankly, it should have happened some time ago. Since Facebook revamped Messages three years ago, the social giant has threaded email, chat and texting into one unified history, and has recently added emojis, as well.

It's pretty fascinating that Facebook and Google debuted new messaging paradigms within six weeks of each other. Facebook Home's one key feature is the prominent placement of its "chat heads" messaging alerts on the home screen. Google is launching a new messaging app particularly focused on group messaging. The debuts of these two initiatives fit within the same timeline: a sudden realization in 2012 that smartphone messaging had started evolving, followed by the feverish development of a new product that would finally launch in the spring of 2013. Facebook and Google are very much on the defense here. So what happened in 2012 that suddenly awakened these slumbering giants?

[More from BGR: Good news for Google Fiber: Broadcast TV audiences are cratering faster than ever]

Of course, there was the sheer volume explosion of WhatsApp, which shocked the app industry by vaulting from 1 billion messages in October 2011 to 10 billion in August 2012. This was the moment when it became obvious that WhatsApp was fundamentally different from Skype and was capturing entirely new segments of consumers.

[More from BGR: Nokia Lumia 928 review: Third time's the charm?]

Read also:

Hey, text message: Grow up (PhoneDog (blog))

Google launches cloud-based syncing service (Cloud Pro)

Explore: 4 additional articles.

Google's Vikram Aggarwal, a software engineer working on the Android platform, revealed today that Gmail and Email, the native Android client that still ships on Android devices as well, now has a combined user base of more than 100 million across the Android install base. It's an interesting stat, because although Gmail and Email only represent two of a multitude of email clients available on Android, it's likely that those two represent the email clients of choice for a wide swath of Android users.

This means that a 100-million-strong active user base for those two combined is probably a pretty good reflection of the total active user base of Android itself, give or take a few million users. That's a good figure to get, since we usually see more about total activations, which is a far less accurate measure of how many people are currently using devices. Activations occur whenever there is a full device reset, for instance, and people often upgrade to new phones, meaning their previous activation is no longer an active one.

Google has passed 900 million Android activations, the company revealed at the I/O keynote earlier this week. Put in context of a 100-million-strong active user base for the core email apps operating on the platform, however, we get a picture of Android users which is much more down to earth. Estimates of active Apple devices have to take into account the 500 million sold to date, with over 300 million now on iOS 6. Updated to that version or being sold with it installed indicates there's a good chance a lot of those are still in active use.

Divining the total number of active users on either platform is one part magic and one part science, and the 100 million is likely shy of the actual total of active Android devices out there, but it's still another piece of the puzzle.
