Central Java Governor Bibit Waluyo has received a backlash following his recent statement criticizing Jathilan or Jaran Kepang (bamboohorse dance) at an international event.
A traditional dance group protested in front of CentralJava City Hall in Semarang on Wednesday, demanding Governor Bibit Waluyo apologizefor referring to the Jaran Kepang as the world's worst artistic form.
The controversial remark was made by the governor during the opening of the 14th Merapi and Borobudur Senior Amateur Golf Tournament in Magelang,Central Java on Sunday. The governor,however, clarified the statement a day later saying he had aimed tocriticize the group that had performed the dance, not the dance itself.
In front of the city hall, the Kridho Turonggo dance group performed the native dance, with performers carrying colorful hobby-horsesand dancing energetically to gamelan music, kompas.com reported.
